Pre-Convention Contests 2025

Pre-Convention contests are various creative projects completed before the start of convention. Projects are to be completed by individual delegates unless listed as a Club Competition. N.B. Information about Dramatic Interpretation, Monologue, Latin Recitation, Sight Reading, Costume and English Oratory can be found on the Creative Arts Contest Page.

2023 Topics for the State Convention! (11/16/22)

This year most contests will be in person however, pre-convention contest remain unchanged as to how they will be submitted. For Creative Art, Monologue and English Oratory will take place before convention online similar to last year; all other creatives will be in person. Graphic Arts will be my judged in person. (11/16/22)

Guidelines for Pre-Convention Submissions

 The following submission guidelines MUST be followed in order for a project to not be disqualified. All other rules as stated on the OJCL website under “Pre-Convention Contests” still apply. N.B. In the past contests have been disqualified for inappropriate file names

I. Modern Myth and Poetry – For these contests, you [the student] must submit your entry online at these links: Modern Myth and Poetry. The deadline for both is Tuesday Feb 22 at 11:59 pm

II. Cartoon and Panel/Comic Storytelling – students must send an email to the Pre-Convention Coordinator(OJCLsubmissions@gmail.com) with the project entry and Contest Entry Form (as an attachment). The email body MUST include your ID number from the school’s membership list as well as correct grade and Latin level. Please name the file which you attachment with the contest name and student’s ID number (e.g. Cartoon 12345). Once received, these will be uploaded to a folder on Google Drive where judges will be able to access the contest and level to which they are assigned.

III. Multimedia – Students must send an email to the Pre-Convention Coordinator (OJCLsubmissions@gmail.com) which includes the following: a. Link to project. When uploading your project to the host site (youtube, google files, etc. the Project MUST be titled with the contest and student ID number (e.g. Multimedia 12345). It will not be able to be retitle this once it is submitted. b. Contest entry sheet (as an attachment) with the student’s name, school, student ID number, and project title (e.g. Caesar’s Best Invasions!, etc.)

IV. Music Video, Commercial, and Short Film

 N.B. Music Video, Commercial, and Skit entries must be sent by a sponsor, which serves as confirmation that he/she has seen the entry and approves of it being entered for competition. If an entry comes from a student email, a verification will be sent to the sponsor.

SHORT FILM (formerly skit) – Sponsors must send an email to the Pre-Convention Coordinator (OJCLsubmissions@gmail.com) which includes the following: a. Link to project. When uploading your project to the host site (youtube, google files, etc. the Project MUST be titled with the contest, school name, and year (e.g. Moeller Skit 2019 ). It will not be able to be retitle this once it is submitted. b. The script. 

COMMERCIAL AND MUSIC VIDEO – Sponsors must send an email to the Pre-Convention Coordinator (OJCLsubmissions@gmail.com) which includes the following: a. Link to project. When uploading your project to the host site (youtube, google files, etc. the Project MUST be titled with the contest, school name, and year (e.g. Columbus Academy Music Video 2019 ). It will not be able to be retitle this once it is submitted. 

V. Publication—Students must send an email to editor@ojcl.org, which includes the following: a. PDF of their school Publication b. Contest entry sheet (as an attachment) with the name of the student submitting the publication, school, student ID number, and Publication Title

2018 Topics!

Music Video topic: Horatius Cocles (at the bridge)

Commercial topic: Emperor Hadrian (N.B. this is to sell a product related to Hadrian or related to something in regard to his rule, not to sell his wall, villa, etc., although the product could be related to one of those)

Comic Panel Story Telling: Illustrated Poetry.  Take a lyric poem or chunk of epic poem (translated) from the Classical canon and illustrate the contents in panel form.

 Submission Instructions:

  • All entries which are submitted as PDF (Cartoon, Publication, Service) must be saved using your last name hyphen (-) followed by the name of the contest (e.g. “Smith-Publication.pdf”)
  • Multimedia only: Make (4) FOUR collated copies of your entry (Bundle copies together using binder clips, paper clips or heavy rubber bands.)
  • Commercial, Music Video and Skit: Send (1) ONE copy of video tape or CD/DVD
  • Poetry/Modern Myths shall be submitted online at the following web page: https://ojcl.org/students/preconv.php
  • Cartoon, Service, and Publication shall be emailed to the appropriate person
  • Print this form, & fill in the information below, taking time to PRINT legibly or TYPE the information.
  • Attach this sheet (completed) securely to the FRONT of the entry. PROVIDE ONE SHEET PER UNIQUE ENTRY (not each copy).
  • Write NO personal information (school name, your name, etc.) on any of the copies of the Project itself. This information is included on this form and as such MUST be attached to the entry when submitted.
